DUO

There is a synchronisation of historical reference and the contemporary. It starts with the imagination of a giant ice cube placed in the Painted Hall. This mass dissolves into matrices and turns into a vault of thousands of cubes include microphones, speakers and reflectors. For the visitor, this is a portal experience between time and space. This monumental, dissolved cube is constructed with light and sound sensors in each array and produces light and sound echoes with the movement and sound of the human aura. It is a metaphysical dialogue between times, places and actions.

A rectangular prism, it’s minimal design redolent of ancient forms, evokes a sense of psychological closeness; while an interconnected mechanical system of magnets and sensors induces a delicate balance and rhythmic harmony. The installation blurs the boundaries of design and space, presenting a multi-sensory journey that fully reveals itself with the viewer’s interaction – the human presence altering the work’s spatial motion and rhythm. At its core, ‘Duo’ encapsulates the essence of ‘two’: a dialogue, an agreement, and the dynamic metaphysical interplay between both centre and periphery.

The lighting design for the installation took several factors into account. Upon entering the historical hall, visitors are greeted by DUO, which breathes softly in the background. As they approach the artwork, a flow of light begins, drawing them deeper into the design. This interaction enhances the overall experience for the visitors. To create this effect, self-standing mini spotlights with wide beam angles were positioned on the floor of the hall, illuminating the work just enough for it to be visible. These spotlights allow the artwork to be perceived as a cohesive whole. The main lighting system was designed with dark reflectors, cell lights, and medium beam angle spotlights integrated into the upper structure of the installation. These spotlights are controlled by a DMX system to create various lighting scenarios. The glare-controlled design of the spotlights allows the lighting system to be fully integrated into the artwork, remaining discreet and unobtrusive for the visitors.

The project was recognised as the Best Project of 2024 in the ART: Bespoke category at the "darc awards", a London-based international lighting design award.
